Stay Dog Safe video transcript

This is a transcript of the Stay Dog Safe video produced by the Department of Internal Affairs:

Hi, I’m Charlie and I’m here to talk to you about being safe around dogs.

Now dogs can be heaps of fun but you also have to be really careful, whether it’s a dog you know well, or one you’re meeting for the first time.

Now just like you, we dogs can get upset, scared or angry. We don’t want to hurt anybody, so come with me now and I’ll show some good ways to be safe when you’re around dogs.

Now I’m going to watch what happens from up in this corner. Why don’t you watch these stories with me?

Here’s Hana on her way to the dairy. She sees Kuri the dog further up the road and I’d bet she’d really like to go and meet him. Uh-oh it looks like she’s going to just rush right up to Kuri.

Pause!

Now it’s really important to ask for permission from the owner before going up to a dog.

Lots of dogs are friendly to people they don’t know but some aren’t. Some are just a little bit scared.

The owner will be able to tell you whether their dog would like to meet you. And besides, it’s just good manners to ask. So don’t forget:

  • Check its sweet – before you meet!
Hmmm… let’s see whether Hana knows about this rule. Oh that’s great! Hana has gone up to the owner nice and calmly and is checking with him whether or not it’s ok to meet with Kuri.

Ka Pai!

Looks like the owner is telling Hana that it’s ok for her to meet with Kuri, but even so, Hana still needs to be really careful about how she behaves around him. Let’s see what she’s going to do next.

Wait a minute! What’s Hana doing? It looks like she’s just going to grab Kuri and give him a big hug! Hmm Kuri might not like that at all.

Pause!

We dogs like to use our noses to check new things out. Our sense of smell is 50 times stronger than yours. If we don’t get to smell you first, we can’t get to know you properly and we might get scared or angry.

How would you like it if someone just rushed up to you in the street and started hugging you?

So remember when meeting a dog let it sniff the back of your hand.

  • To understand – they sniff your hand!
What will Hana do?

Kapai Hana!

Kuri has come up to you and is sniffing your hand. So it looks like he’s keen to meet you. Awesome!

They seem to be getting on really well. I reckon Hana wants to give Kuri a pat now. I wonder if she knows how to do that safely.

Uh-ho I think Hana is going to pat Kuri on the top of his head! That’s not the way to do it Hana.

Pause!

Lots of people try to pat us dogs on the tops of our heads. But we don’t actually like this at all.

In dog language, putting your hand over our heads means that you’re trying to boss us around or scare us.

Some dogs might get really upset if you do that. As well as that, we like to be able to see your hand.

Then we know exactly what you’re doing and we won’t get startled. So make sure to be gentle and stroke only the chin, chest or shoulders.

  • Chin or chest – that’s the best!
I’m sure Hana know about this. But I wonder if she will remember? Aw Hana that looks nice and gentle. Kuri is really loving that.

Ka pai!

Hey Hana did really well meeting Kuri. And it looks like they’re going to be friends.

Let’s go over those 3 tips again and see if you can remember them.

  • Check its sweet – before you meet!
  • To understand – they sniff your hand!
  • Chin or chest – that’s the best!
Enoke has come to visit his Nana, and she’s got a little puppy at her house.

I bet he’d really like to give that pup a pat, wouldn’t you? But hang on Enoke, that’s not such a smart idea if you stop and think about it.

Pause!

It’s really important to ask an adult before meeting a puppy.

Sometimes the puppy’s mother may be nearby and she can be very protective. She might get upset if anyone tries to touch her pup and could really hurt you.

Even if the puppy’s mum isn’t around, you still need to check with an adult before you meet a pup. Remember puppies aren’t toys to be played with, they are young dogs and can hurt you, by jumping, scratching and biting, just like an adult dog can.

  • To meet a pup – ask a grown up!
Enoke, I hope you remember to check with your Nana first.

That’s very smart, Enoke. You’ve checked with Nanna that the puppy’s mothers won’t mind you patting it. And Nanna is there to watch that the puppy doesn’t hurt you by mistake.

Ka Pai!

Hey, it looks like the puppy’s mother Lady has come in to eat her dinner.

Enoke and Lady are good friends and Enoke hasn’t seen Lady since he got to his Nana’s house., so I bet he’ll wanna go over and say hi to her.

Lady really looks like she is enjoying her dinner. But hang on Enoke. Now’s not the time to give her a pat. “Grrrrrrr.”

Pause!

We dogs look forward to our food. We love to eat. When we think someone might be going to take our food, we can really get worried and try our best to keep them away.

We might not understand that you only want to say hello. So it’s really important to stay away from a dog who is eating or has a bone.

  • If a dog has a snack – keep well back!
Enoke, I hope you remember this tip. After all you wouldn’t like someone to get between you and your food.

Ka Pai!

It’ll be a much better time to go and say hello to Lady once she’s finished eating her food and walked away from her bowl.

Lady has done with her dinner and has come to see Enoke for a pat. She’s getting all excited, she’s so happy to see him.

Now Enoke looks like he’s going to let Lady lick his face. That’s not such a clever idea. And not just because it’s a bit gross.

Pause!

Even if you know a dog really well, it’s important that you never kiss or put your face down close to a dog’s face. Sometimes it might seem that he’d like to lick your face to show you that we like you, but we dogs have really sharp teeth. And if we get too excited or surprised we can sometimes hurt you. Besides, we dogs can have really bad breath.

  • Keep your face – out of their space!
I really hope Enoke remembers this tip. That was great Enoke. That was much safer. And Lady is still really happy.

Ka Pai!

Enoke did really well with all those dogs at Nanna’s house. What were those tips you jus learnt again? Let’s check them out.

  • To meet pup – ask a grown up!
  • If a dog has a snack – keep well back!
  • Keep your face – out of their space!
Lauren and Jordan are at the beach. And they’re playing a fun game of tag. Misty’s there too, relaxing in the sun. and warming up after her swim. But Misty’s not really used to kids. And all that shouting and running is making her really nervous. Uh-oh.

Pause!

Some of us dogs get really freaked out around a lot of noise and hustle. If we see you rushing towards us, or hear you shouting loudly, we will probably think that there is something wrong, after all we can’t understand what you are shouting about.

We might get upset and try and chase you away, which can be scary for you, so please remember do not run around or shout when near a dog.

  • Don’t run and shout – it will freak us out!
Let’s see what’s going to happen now. Hmmm. I’m a bit worried.

Well done kids. Now everyone is happy and you can keep on with your game.

Nice one!

I wonder what Lauren and Jordan will come across next.

Lauren and Jordan have finished their game and are walking along the beach on their way home. Wow! Ah, who’s ball is that?

Hey Lauren, what are you doing with Speedy’s ball? I hope you’re not going to tease him with it by not giving it back.

Pause!

Don’t you get upset when someone teases or annoys you? We dogs don’t like it either. But since we can’t speak, we can’t even ask you to stop. Think how frustrating that would be. We might get so upset that we end up hurting you. It doesn’t matter how big or how small we are, we have feelings too. That’s why you should never tease or annoy a dog.

  • A dog’s not a toy – don’t tease or annoy!
OK then Lauren, what are you going to do with that ball. Great work Lauren! That’s Awesome you didn’t tease Speedy!

Nice one!

Looks like its time for Lauren and Jordan to head up the path to home now.

Uh-oh! Oscar doesn’t look to be in a very happy mood. Be really careful guys.

Pause!

Even though Lauren and Jordan like dogs, Oscar looks pretty grumpy. Lauren and Jordan don’t feel too comfortable about being around him.

You might feel like running away from a dog that’s scaring you or you might try and be tough and just push right past it. But either of those things might make him want to chase you.

If you’re ever unsure, its better to play it safe. If you are scared of a dog, move slowly and quietly away from it. Make sure you can still see it, but don’t stare into its eyes, cause that can make some dogs really mad. Remember…

  • Quiet and slow – is the way to go!
What are you going to do Lauren and Jordan? Will you try and get past Oscar? Or just walk quietly and slowly away and go round to the next exit?

Well handled guys.

Ka pai!

Lauren and Jordan did so well with all those dogs on the beach. Let’s check out the smart stuff they did again.

  • Don’t run and shout – it will freak us out!
  • A dog’s not a toy – don’t tease or annoy!
  • Quiet and slow – is the way to go!
I reckon it was really interesting to see how those kids coped with all those different situations with dogs. Lets check out all the tips we’ve learnt from them and try see how many you can remember.

  • Check it’s sweet – before you meet!
  • To understand – they sniff your hand!
  • Chin or chest – that’s the best!

Hey, thanks for hanging out with me today, I had a great time, hope you did too. Well all this talking has really worn me out. I reckon I need to take a dog nap in my kennel.

See ya!
